Any vintage dealer will tell you that part of the reason they work in this business is because each item has a story; a history that's passed down from owner to owner, giving items we sell and keep for ourselves a "soul"—something that just isn't found at a Room & Board. That said, have you ever gone to a garage or estate sale and wondered, "Was anyone ever murdered with these candlesticks I'm about to buy?"

No? Oh, well I do it all the time. And apparently I'm not the only one since cursed and haunted objects is the central plot point behind the highly underrated 80s series, Friday the 13th.

The show has absolutely zero to do with the movie franchise of the same name, but instead focuses on long lost cousins Ryan Dallion and Micki Foster (played by John D. LeMay and Canadian pop flash-in-the-pan, Robey) who inherit their uncle's antiques shop. Story goes that dearly departed uncle Lewis made a pact with the devil years before, and as part of the agreement had to sell cursed antiques to unsuspecting shoppers who then went forward to wreak havoc.

Ryan and Mickey don't so much sell antiques out of their storefront, as they go on hour-long adventures attempting to get back the cursed items sold by Uncle Lewis over the years. Call them supernatural hoarders.

Still, the quintessential Friday the 13th episode has to be a tale of teenage lust and an aforementioned cosmetic compact gone awry called, Vanity's Mirror.

At the beginning of the episode a homeless woman is in possession of the compact—which allows the owner to shine it in someone's face ensuring they fall in love—until she gets run over by a car after having used the mirror to kill a man.

Lucky for us, homely Canadian teenager, Helen (played by Ingrid Veninger) just happens by and picks up the now cracked vintage compact for herself.

There is a second part to the Vanity's Mirror episode, but that doesn't come until season two, which I have yet rewatch in all its glory. But if you're in for a good scare—okay, maybe not scare—but a nice and cheesy 80s series that is ostensibly about the supernatural dangers of the vintage business, check out Friday the 13th this Halloween.
It's been a while since the last post around here, but if you follow STUDY here, here, or here, you know we're alive and well and still hawking vintage furniture. Since December of 2011, STUDY's been lucky enough to have a successful space at the Broadway Antique Market, but with that also comes complacency and ultimately... not doing shows. I mean, if you're selling on the regular and you don't have to haul anything around... it becomes easy to forget how you started. Which is why we're taking this show on the road and going back to our roots with The Vintage Bazaar! This time TVB is teaming up with Renegade Craft Fair for Renegade's 10th anniversary show in Chicago.

This will be STUDY's first pop-up show in over a year and we're excited remembering just how fun these can be. In addition to the 100s of Renegade vendors, TVB will have over 50 vendors off of Division at Wolcott. Not to mention the local food, booze and music Renegade always has to offer. So come by and visit! It's been a while.

So what I like looking at things under glass... get off my back.

Sometimes the trends that are closest to your heart are also those that you just need to give up. What is it they say, kill your darlings? It's this way with terrariums/cloches/whathaveyou. They're EVERYWHERE these days, but do they really need to go the way of taxidermy and be relegated to an area of design meant for only Home Goods and lazy designers? While scrounging around online for evidence that this too has passed, I only came up with further proof that cloches are actually forever and always and not going anywhere.

This is all thanks to the work of British artist Kate MccGwire who meticulously affixes feathers to undulating shapes and - often - puts them under glass. They seem to have a movement to them... like some kind of twisted curio that could come alive at any moment.

There's more to getting married than love and commitment... there are also tax incentives, parties, and gifts. And in this day and age of questionable nuptial arrangements, it's probably best we focus on the fun part of having a wedding: THE PLANNING. And that's exactly what you'll be able to do this Saturday when the Vintage Bazaar takes over the Empty Bottle from 11am to 4pm. They'll bring the usual round-up of affordably priced vintage goods, all with a focus on outfitting your impending wedding with a little unique vintage flair. And better yet , all vendors are available to source, style, and plan for your big day even after the market is over.

The internet is in a huff over SOPA/PIPA, and if you haven't heard about it after today then you've obviously been heeding Le Tigre's advice to Get Off The Internet. Seriously though, it's pretty horrifying legislation and makes me want to move to Europe more now than ever... even if they are in financial ruin. So if you've ever read a design blog that reused content (attributed or not), posted a video, or done just about anything that makes the internet unique and above all EQUALIZING, then now is a good a time to make your voice heard:

In case you hadn't heard, The Art Institue of Chicago is offering free "Winter Weekdays" admission to Illinois residents through February 10, 2012. Admission to the museum is normally $18 for adults and $12 for children, students, and seniors. I bring this up only because it's a great public service that you now have no excuse not to take advantage of, but also because it's your last chance to catch Bertrand Goldberg: Architecture of Invention. I saw this exhibit in November and was floored at how great it was. If you're a fan of architecture, city planning, or even scale-models of buildings, then this is a do not miss. But GO NOW since the exhbit closes on Sunday, January 15th. Sure, if you take it in after Friday you'll have to pay cash money and battle crowds, but just think how culturally enriched you'll feel!

Architecture of Invention is the first comprehensive retrospective of the Goldberg's work and covers his early experiments with furniture design and prefabricated housing, but the show really shines when it focuses on his large-scale urban planning and hospital projects.

One of my first jobs was delivering reels of film for the now defunct - sad face - Pacific Title & Art Studio. For 90 or so years, Pac Title was a big player in the film titles arena, developing the main titles for The Jazz Singer, Gone With the Wind, Ben Hur, and later working on projects like... er, The Fast and the Furious and Watchmen. Despite the place completely going down the tubes, it's where I learned to really appreciate the craft that goes into making compelling titles that add to a narrative. King of this craft? Saul Bass, obvs.

There's been a lot of news about Bass lately what with the release of Jennifer Bass (his daughter) and Pat Kirkham's Saul Bass: A Life In Film & Design. It's a stunning book that gives full attention not only to Bass' work in film, but also his graphic and corporate identity ventures. That said, Bass really shines in the titles arena where he is a master of KISS. This short video - put together by Ian Albinson over at The Art of the Title - pretty succinctly sums up what was so brilliant about Bass; the work is graphic, tense, bold, but most of all, memorable.
Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13178384583075788099noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7380814513052028422.post-52845191266912245282012-01-09T05:00:00.000-08:002012-01-09T07:46:46.540-08:00Black, White and Read All Over

I read a lot of shelter magazines for pleasure and generally to stay on the up-and-up of what's going on the design world. There are always a ton of amazing ideas that sort of mill around in my head for a while, but rarely do I find a project that I want to execute verbatim. Well, not so in the February 2012 issues of House Beautiful. You see, there's this great design team in Los Angeles, Nickey · Kehoe, who redid this ridiculously beautiful Craftsman home in Venice and basically painted every single solitary piece of wood in the place white, which is - I know - heresy in some circles. Oh, and they did all the beams and crown molding BLACK.

I only bring this up because it's frigging INSPIRED and because I currently live in an apartment that is rocking it's own brand of paint-challenged crown molding.

If I have one complaint about my place - and I do love it for its size, layout, etc. - it's that it's way too dark. Oh, and the crown molding is painted two distinct colors: White and Creamy Drunken Tapioca.

Anyway, I think the Nickey · Kehoe combination of white walls, black molding would do just the trick in this place - brightening it up, giving it some definition, all the while not dragging the space down.

And in case you're wondering, the white they used is Benjamin Moore's Simply White. The article didn't specify a black, but it's definitely one of the more inky blacks Benjamin Moore carries... no gray tones here.

How was your Christmas/Hanukkah haul this year? So that question is probably in bad taste, but I'd just like to share with you how over the moon I am with one gift I received in particular. My ever-prescient sister really hit the nail on the head when she gave me Michael Bruno and Craig Kellogg's new-ish coffee table book, Dealer's Choice: At Home With Purveyors of Antique and Vintage Furnishings. This book is - very un-ironically - the dream I've been waiting to come true. It profiles in 384 big, bold, beautifully executed pages the homes and apartments of 32 of the world's top dealers and shop owners specializing in antique and vintage furnishings. Even as I write this I'm thinking they can definitely do a second volume since there are SO MANY great shops out there, but these 32 interiors are truly the best of the best. If you like Apartment Therapy house tours, take note - this book is undoubtedly the heroin of house tours.

Aside from the fact that I want EVERYTHING in this book, there's also a refreshingly blunt foreword from 1stDibs founder Michael Bruno, and an equally candid introduction about the vintage business from Craig Kellogg: the astronomical prices the market can create around a piece, the importance of building a brand/mystique to enhance perceived value, the waxing and waning of styles... it's brief, but it's all there. Still, the real stars of the book are the homes.

The one complaint I've read about in reviews of the book are that the spaces are too sparse, and that many people who deal in vintage furnishings have way more stuff. Well, to that I say bah! This isn't the vintage hoarders coffee table book. The dealer's profiled here aren't just shopkeeps, or hobbyists: they're also curators and tastemakers. I'd argue that every person's home should be a reflection of who they are, but this is especially true of people who deal in the business of interiors.

And since my own vintage business is called STUDY, the most important lesson I took away is that no matter how esteemed you are in the echelons of the vintage business, your personal collection is never really off-limits in terms of what you sell. This, honestly, was very eye-opening for me since I've always held a mark of true success as a vintage dealer to be that you have your stuff and then the store's stuff. Well lo and behold, people like Adam Blackman (Blackman/Cruz) and Richard Wright (Wright Auctions) are swapping out pieces on a regular basis.

So if you're in the vintage business, have ever bought a piece of vintage furniture, or just love seeing how other people live... go buy this book.

Well there she is... the STUDY booth at Broadway Antique Market is officially live as of last Thursday and thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who came out to help me celebrate this milestone. Not to get all sappy on you, but I've got a lot of personal reasons (don't we all) for being excited about this particular space, and it really meant a lot to see so many friends and longtime fans of STUDY show up; we even got a visit from the cutest lesbian couple ever who've been followers and customers of STUDY's since way back when we exhibited at the DANK Haus during the first Vintage Bazaar!

So let it be known... if STUDY can win over the elusive design-minded lesbian crowd, we can do anything. Today Portia and Ellen, tomorrow the WORLD!

And now for a few random thoughts/truth time:

1. Lesson Learned: I need to take more pictures of actual attendees/friends/customers next time I do this. This is recap of a party, not a vintage housewares perp walk.

2. I'm still negotiating my need to have a carefully edited, shopable booth with the fact that I'm here to sell, sell, SELL. As in more. Stuff. Everywhere. It's a balance for sure, and I've already pushed myself pretty far IMHO. We'll see what the receipts say, but if all else fails I'm shoving all the smalls in the showcase and letting the big pieces stand out. There... I said it.

3. Domestica was kind enough to feature STUDY in its coverage of the BAM party and sale. I had absolutely no idea this was in the works so it was a total pleasure to open up my email and see an instagramed photo of the booth being broadcast to the masses. If I didn't say it before, thank you Bradley Lincoln! Thank you Chicago Home + Garden!

4. Can we just talk about when old school companies get social media right? I tweeted a few weeks ago about how I was painting the booth Benjamin Moore's Hale Navy because it's the perfect color and I love it... and then B. Moore's twitter account actually responded and even asked for details of the party so they could re-tweet it. They've got over 20,000 followers which, if you're Ashton Kutcher (and why would you want to be) isn't a big deal, but the 20,000 followers they do have are some KEY frigging people in the design community. Needless to say, I'm grateful that B. Moore makes great paint, and that I know how to use a computer.

5. One of my favorite moments of the night was when Randolph Street Market founder Sally Schwartz stopped by the booth and immediately set her sights on a set of eight gilt and green highballs (you can see part of them in the photo below). She told me her parents had the exact same glasses which she inherited and which she now only had two of. Sure it's always nice to make a customer happy with some deep emotional connection from the past, but when it's, uh, someone who has access to almost the entire inventory of the Randolph Street Market... well then it's really special.

6. Lest I forget, another Chicago vintage market doyenne graced us with her appearance: Katherine Raz, co-founder of the Vintage Bazaar and BackGarage shop-owner extraordinaire, stopped by to take in the sights and drool over STUDY's Zawitz Tangle sculptures. I told her that since she's been such a pivotal part of STUDY's growth, I'd officially name an entire section of the STUDY booth, "The Katherine Raz Tribute Corner & Commemorative Section". Chrome pillars, Zawitz sculptures and all.

And in an effort to be completely redundant, thanks again to everyone who visited, will visit, or thinks about visiting.

We "soft opened" on Sunday (I know, so insidery) but we're getting ready to put our big boy pants on tonight when BAM has their annual Holiday Party and Sale from 6-9pm. STUDY is offering 20% off all merchandise, the vast majority of which is brand new since we haven't done as show since Dose Market in August! It's been too long people... seriously, STUDY misses you, and hopefully you miss STUDY.

That said, we're not the only ticket in town this holiday season. BAM's sale runs through Thursday, December 15th and its 70+ vendors will be offering discounts anywhere from 15-50% off.
BIG BIG news here at STUDY HQ! I know I've been a little, uh,
remiss in updating this blog, but it's all gonna be worth it once you
hear what we've got in store for you (hint, painfully obvious
hint... STORE being the operative word).

Thar she blows ladies and gentlemen... Chicago's grande dame of
vintage modern markets: Broadway Antique Market, or BAM for short.

STUDY was lucky enough to secure a booth space on the first floor and
we'll be debuting our wares during BAM's annual holiday party taking
place Thursday, December 8th from 6-9pm... and you're all
invited! There will be wine, beer, over 70 vendors and, of course,
discounts for days. To say I'm over the moon about this opportunity is
a severe understatement; some of Chicago's top dealers have booth
spaces at BAM so this is obviously going to be an exercise in bringing
my A-game. Case in point:

I've seen this in person and it's even more fantastic than pictures
can do justice. Buy it yesterday.

Or if exquisite coffee tables are your thing, there's always this
totally inconspicuous Paul McCobb brass and white glass showstopper.

And rest assured that there's lots of burl hanging around these parts.
Y'all know my obsession with all things burl, so no wonder
I'm STRONGLY advocating you buy this credenza.

Sure these pieces don't belong to STUDY, but I'm so unabashedly pumped
to be selling alongside such quality vendors/pieces. And you know what
this also means: REGULAR HOURS!

Broadway Antique Market is open Monday-Saturday, 11am-7pm &
Sunday, 11am-6pm, which means you can get your hands on STUDY whenever
you want to... or you know what I mean.

Incidentally, the space BAM is in started out as a furniture retailer
whose tagline was, "Friendly, Reliable, Progressive":

Not a coincidence, I'm sure.

So come visit STUDY at BAM starting Thursday, December 8th!

Add this to the long list of items I buy for the explicit purpose of reselling, but end up putting in my house because, a. I love them, and b. when is the next time I'm going to come across a 6 ft long Parsons sofa table? Seriously folks, things are about to get out of hand if I don't do another market soon... Papa needs to unload some merch. But for the time being, ye old sofa table is staying put. I'd been toying with the idea of purchasing one for approximately the last four years, but I've never lived in a place that would exactly accommodate a floating sofa/table combo with 33" clearance on both sides. You heard it here first... STUDY thinks about ADA guidelines all the time... it's just how we roll (no pun intended).

I found the table about two weeks ago at an estate sale in Albany Park. The sale was held in a condo, so I wasn't holding out for any major pieces, but then I asked the organiser about the table hiding under a sheet and holding an extensive collection of paperback romance novels. It didn't have any tags and I wasn't sure it would fit in my car, but when burl calls, you better frigging answer.

Right now this thing is my absolute favorite thing in the world. Even though it's laminate and "technically" it's faux-burl, I really don't care... it's extremely well done and is a lotta "look". Given the fact that I've been travelling for most of the past month, I didn't give a second thought to researching it, but if 1stdibs is to be believed, I think we may have a Milo Baughman piece on our hands:

I've had a hell of a time trying to research Thayer Coggin Institutional, but I understand that a lot of this furniture was in Michael Reese Hospital on Chicago's South Side (before it was unceremoniously demolished).

It being October and all, let's just hope it didn't come from a psych ward, and that it's not haunted.

This past weekend was the first in almost a month I've been able to hit up any estate sales or do any thrifting - more on that later - but I also took the chance to check out the second annual Design Harvest festival on Grand Avenue. There were more of the same excellent vendors from last year (Revision Home and Furniture Revival to name a few) and some welcome new blood from up north (Andersonville's Room Service). Also, the turnout was huge. Huge as in, the tent needs to be widened next year to allow for more foot traffic. But if you're going to have a problem, then it's a good one to have I suppose. Still, my real jesusmaryandjoseph moment came when I realized The Find had opened a location on Grand Avenue in the old Urban Remains space. As soon as I walked in, I immediately fell in love with this pair of equal parts creepy and amazing bisque busts. They're from the 60s and remind me of a pivotal scene from one of my favorite childhood movies.

Priced $650 for the pair, I didn't buy them, but it seems like a reasonable amount for some monumental figurative art... creepy or not.

Come to think of it, the other piece I was really drawn to at The Find was this horrific clown painting. My biometric Halloween clock must be fully wound.

Scented Glossy Magazines tweeted that it's the monkey with cymbals that really takes the painting to the next level. I couldn't agree more.

In other news, music from the Hideout also happened...

As did immigration reform... sort of.

So what did I pick up after abstaining from thrifting for almost a month? Well let's hit it by category and just start with art:

Here you see a trio of prints I've picked up of late, all of which pretty accurately describe the various facets of my personality: A grumpy old man, a sweet and exceedingly well-behaved fox terrier and a raging sea.

I contain multitudes, y'all.

It's been in the 60s and raining off and on since Saturday here in Chicago which is an all too early slap in the face from Mother Nature. Normally we get at least a little reprieve before tumbling into eternal winter, but not so much this year. At least cooler weather is good for two things: excuses to buy new clothes (note to self: buy ridiculously comfortable wool socks this year) and excuses to start laborious and time-intensive projects. I'm doing the latter right now since embarking on a rehab of a Planner Group by Paul McCobb for Winchendon occasional chair that I picked up a couple of weeks ago off of Craigslist. Considering that I just moved, I was really in no position to be shelling out more money on furniture that may or may not make into the permanent collection, but the price was right and when I arrived to pick it up from the seller I was able to talk her down just a little bit more... at least enough to cover supplies to strip off this captains chair's very, VERY brown finish.

Once I got the chair home I couldn't contain my excitement and, naturally, had to do at least a little sharing. Here's the chair looking all vaseline-lens sexy and sultry in it's Instagram preview pic.

And here's the state of things today.

Ugh. I know. Stripping furniture is possibly one of the least fun, most often abandoned DIY projects out there, but we perservere since the outcomes - if you take your time - are so incredibly rewarding. And you may say, "Why not leave well enough alone?" which is a totally valid arguement. That said, there are only a few things in life I'm not willing to put up with (okay, maybe more) and an ugly finish is one of them. I've seen this finish described as "tobacco" which is pretty apropos since it looks like someone spent a better part of the 20th century using this as a smoking chair.

So there's no turning back now ladies and gentlemen. Not that I would since I know some glorious maple lies in wait. But whether or not that maple will ever see the light of day again is still up in the air as this particular chair also has some naturally occuring mineral streaks going on.

Some call them charming, I call them heinous. One way or another, they will be dealt with.

And stay tuned for results! They're bound to make you either clap, cry or curse a little... and really all three would be the appropriate reaction.
Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13178384583075788099noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7380814513052028422.post-36728960396387666662011-09-08T07:28:00.001-07:002011-09-08T07:32:16.028-07:00You Had Me At iPhone

I've been using Instagram (the photo sharing app) since I first ponied up for an iPhone about four months ago and have been a steady user ever since. It's charms were instantly recognizable: responsive, reliable, incredibly easy to use AND compatible with Flickr, tumblr and facebook. I'd used Hipstamatic and Camera+'s image filtering services before, but ultimately left both behind since they left a lot to be desired in the way of filtering quality and the essential ability not to shut down in the middle of using them.

Not so with Instagram! It's the perfect example of an app being social, well designed and basically idiot-proof. Call me smitten.

Now no one is implying that Instagram replaces "real" photography - I still love me a good SLR - but it does free you up to do a bit more observing and documenting in your everyday life, which to me is a beautiful, beautiful thing...
and did I mention the filters? Right now Instagram only supports 15 filters, but that's sort of the beauty of the app; it's not overly complicated and fifteen options are just enough to make looking at your friends stupid pictures of their cat using a litter box for the first time... interesting.

Judging by a completely unscientific sample of the people STUDY follows on Instagram, the "Lomo" filter is by far the most popular. I suspect this has something to do with the fact that it makes everything look highly saturated and that Urban Outfitters has made a cottage industry out of hawking nouveau Lomo cameras.
But if you ask me - and I know you will - the "Nashville" filter is the way to go:

This post should be subtitled "...or what I did on my summer vacation" since it feels like all my friends and I did on our trip to Nashville and Pigeon Forge, TN (read: pilgrimage to Dollywood) was use the Nashville filter on our iPhones/cameras/future-devices. In fact, I only used my go-to point and shoot that I typically take with me on trips a handful of times. And I really didn't miss it once.

In full disclosure, my friend Sarah took some of these photos (most importantly Dolly's wig below) but I had to steal three of her photos for this post... it takes a village, people.

Since I'm in the vintage business, it only fits that I'd try and make all my photos look old... but it's more than just that. I look at these snapshots now and no matter how uninteresting the subject matter or how awkward the angle, there's something instantly cohesive and emblematic about them which makes our already rosy little getaway look even more fun. Which is pretty damn hard when you're sharing a Smoky Mountain log cabin with these people.

Faster than you can say Grant-Achatz-made-me-a-cocktail-of-farmers-market-strawberries-Thai-basil-long-pepper-simple-syrup-and-Domaine-Chandon-sparkling-wine-at-the-last-Dose-Market, we turn around and here it is again. This will be our third Dose and if the poster color change up is any indication (green is our favorite color), this market may just turn out to be the best. Expect more quality vintage furnishings and accessories from STUDY, with a few surprises thrown in since last time around you lovely customers cleaned us out! And oh do we love it when that happens.

Seriously though, on August 14th you and yours should stop by the River East Arts Center between 10am and 4pm to check out what we'll be offering... but take heed from TimeOut Chicago:
Katherine and Libby over at the Vintage Bazaar wrote a post last week about how music can be a great jumping off point for inspiration when designing a room. Well, sweet baby Jesus grant me some music since both Andrew and I have been absolutely zapped by our 9 to 5s of late. Luckily we've found Lykke Li's new album Wounded Rhymes to be a huge inspiration.

Okay, so we're completely stealing this idea from Katherine and Libby, but we think that's okay since it's a great idea and we can't stop listening to Lykke Li. Specifically, I Follow Rivers. We think these rooms could make you feel like you're living in the video, which depending on your opinion of stalking someone across a cold, wintry beachfront could be a good or bad thing. Nice rooms either way.

Just as we were starting our week in review post, news came that Lucian Freud had died. I think it's safe to say you can't be shocked when someone well into their eighties passes away, but I was. Freud was one of those incredibly talented people with soaring personal faults who managed to have a long and extremely successful career. And he left behind a huge bulk of work. You'd think Freud would've been creatively drained by his gambling problems and the upwards of 20 - some say 40 - children he had, but in Freud's own words, "debt stimulates me." There's much not to be admired about Freud, but his work isn't one.

When Cy Twombly died just a few weeks ago, there was a huge outpouring from bloggers with tributes and career retrospectives, but with Freud's passing there's a stunning silence from design blogs. Or maybe we're just not looking in the right places. I suppose Twombly's abstract splats and scribbles are far less threatening to the interiors of an Elle Decor spread than Freud's intensely confrontational portraits, but for two figurative painting/drawing nerds (read: Andrew and myself) having a Freud hang in our living room is a dream worth fantasizing about. On our trip to New York last year we took a snapshot of one of our favorite Freuds, Naked Man, Back View:

Like many of his paintings it's all gross, immense flesh, but there's something vaguely serene about it too. I know a lot of people think taking pictures of paintings (especially in museums) degrades the work, but I'm glad we took this one since you can see our legs reflected in the protective glass. It's officially the closest we'll get to being a Freud subject. And the closest we'll get to prying this painting out of the Met's cold, institutional hand.

In lieu of blogs you should be reading this week, here's your jumpstart guide to Lucian Freud - good, bad and ugly:

Lately we've had bears on the brain. And, no, not that kind. We're talking real-life, honest to goodness bears that you find in the wild. You know, the kind that kill documentary filmmakers and ravage your campsite while you sleep. In reality, I would never want to encounter an actual bear in the wild... admiring bears as depicted in art and artifacts is much more my speed.

All this is why Andrew and I were pretty excited when we picked up this bronze tray at an estate sale a few months ago. I had every intention of selling it until Andrew suggested we keep at least one item from the day's haul. Still, I took a few photos for the store just in case:

But then we put him on the dresser and he's been the perfect landing pad for keys, wallets, what have you. There are so many things right about him: he's gold, he's useful and he's ADORABLE. So much so that we even had a little impromptu instagram photo session this morning.

And we're not the only ones admiring the noble bear lately (hence the "trending" title). Check out SF Girl by the Bay's post yesterday for all sorts of bear ephemera culled from the internet. And in searching for our tray online, we found there's even a collector's niche of trays featuring bears as guardians of important stuff.
Truth time... bears are currently rivaling giraffes in the race for John's favorite animal and I can wholeheartedly get behind this bear trend since they're: a. not owls, and b. they remind me of home.
It's been such a busy (in a good way) week that, would you believe, we haven't had any time to catch up on our blog reading. Well all that's certainly gonna change this weekend when Andrew and I engage in a marathon blog reading race. That, or we'll check "Mark all as read" in Google Reader and do something much more productive with our time. Yeah, that's probably the better option. But just so you don't feel short-changed because of the lack of a Friday round-up, here's a song that's sure to set your weekend off just right:
Sam Sparro's Black and Gold is all top hats, limos and shiny vests. It also has us thinking we need to hit up an estate sale or two and find some more brass and/or Georges Briard tumblers.
This trip report is an entire month late, but I had to share it with you since it was during this trip that I picked up the summer tote that dreams are made of. First off, Providence, RI sounds incredibly unassuming until you actually get there. I managed to squirrel away a few hours late one afternoon to explore Providence's historic city center and completely fell in love with College Hill, the shops along Westminster Street and The Rhode Island School of Design's store, RISD Works. There I bought my one and only Providence purchase which I've since been carrying around with me everywhere I go.

The picture from RISD Works' website may leave a little to be desired, but trust, this a not only a gorgeous bag with an image of an engraved CANINE on it, but it's huge without being ridiculous. And I know... leave it to the guys from STUDY to find a summer tote almost completely devoid of color, but hey, we know a good thing when we see it. You can purchase your own "The Brilliant Line" tote here and read more about the exhibition this particular engraving came from here.

Other than that, Providence was beautiful, historically satisfying and has made the must-do list under places to go back to before dead.

I also heard about a fantastic antiques store, Heir, shortly after I got into town... but was completely devastated to find out from a local shopkeep that they'd moved to New York City just weeks before! Luckily, they left their sign behind and it was everything I could do not to rip it down and stuff it in my new tote.
No worries, I left it hanging for everyone else to enjoy.
And since the trip was mostly for work - it was, much like this post, short and sweet.Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13178384583075788099noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7380814513052028422.post-6603037856648139892011-07-08T05:00:00.008-07:002011-07-08T09:45:00.675-07:00Best of the Blogs: STUDY's Week in Review - 7/8

OMG, it's Friday and we haven't had a single post all week! Sad for us and sad for you too, but we have our reasons: Monday was 4th of July; we joined the biggest/most enjoyable time-suck known to man, Instagram; and we've been running around getting ready for the second installment of Dose Market. Oh yeah, that's right... you can see us in person on Sunday at 10am when we drop by the River Easy Arts Center. Also, a word to the wise: Grantz Achatz dropped by last time and he liked it so much that his much ballyhooed gin-joint Aviary will be offering Dose attendees a complimentary cocktail between 10 and noon (i.e. that more than covers the cost of admission). So come get tossed at Dose with STUDY! Our prices will look even better than they already are.

And now for your pre-Dose roundup:

Happy prelude to your 4th of July weekend everyone! Or maybe you've already started celebrating. Personally it's everything we can do not to run outside right now and start grilling. But judging by the skies over Chicago and the epic-sized hail we had last night, that's not gonna be happening today. Oh, to get away to some place far off and exotic... or maybe to some place way more drivable like Minneapolis: Land of Mary Tyler Moore and Joe Sinness!

So whether you're battling the elements, vacationing in Tahiti or just staying close to home... here's to your perfect weekend!

Did ya' hear? ReadyMade magazine is dead and even though we don't subscribe anymore, it's a damn shame. - @finediving

We've talked about these books before, but these pictures are new and beautiful and totally worth revisiting. - @ArrenWilliams

Quick update today... {shop} STUDY is filling out nicely since we've been filling it up with some recent finds in prep for Dose Market on Sunday, July 10th. You'll be able to get a look at these beauties in person then.
